To joining a mothers’ group isn’t just about the lattes, there are lots of important benefits for your health and for your baby’s development. You can ask any new mum and you will see that they aren’t too sure about this mother’s group thing. For a lot of women mother’s group is an absolute godsend and they don’t know what they would have done without it. So, here are some tips for why it’s good to visit some mothers’ group in London.
1. Getting into a routine
If you are a first time parents and you are used to working full-time, the adjustment to being a home-based carer is huge. Having fixed dates, like a weekly mothers’ group, in your social calendar can help you and your baby to get into a routine together.

2. Creating a peer support network
A mothers’ group is about being a mother, and the power of this common connection should not be overrated. Friends who aren’t parents may not understand the trials of being a new mother, and that disconnect can drive you away from them, or be enough to prevent you from turning to them from help.

3. Keeping an eye on milestones
Every child is different, and will hit their milestones at their own pace, seeing them in a group of kids about their age is a good way to keep an eye on how they’re progressing. If there’s something they’re not doing, or doing in a very different way, it can be useful to mention this to your GP.

4. What happens next?
As your child gets older, you might consider a playgroup. Unlike mothers’ groups which are established more formally by your hospital, playgroup is an informal session, run by parents and caregivers.

Finding a group
Opportunities to meet like-minded people are easier than you think. Antenatal classes at your local hospital allow you to meet couples or parents embarking on the same changes as you. In addition, your Child Health Nurse will ask whether you are interested and will point you in the right direction. Your first step should be to ask other parents you know. They might be able to recommend one or be able to ask their friends if they know of any.
